{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with F1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track right in his path
The dangerous situation happened on the third rotation when safety workers were seen on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to change his compromised front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two guys running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track safety personnel can be permitted to just run across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the FIA
"During the third lap, track officials were alerted and made ready to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were withdrawn and a caution signal was shown in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired after that point"
